No drug is complete without the ill wanted, but always there side effects. Methadone side effects are mostly mild but when the drug is taken in excess or the drug is taken for reasons other than to curb cravings or reduce pain the side effects can be very uncomfortable and difficult to cope with. The following side effects should be reported to your doctor immediately as they may signify an allergic reaction to the drug is occurring and this could be very dangerous for the individual taking the drug:
- Hives
- Itching
- Swelling of the face, lips or tongue
- Swelling of the throat
- Extreme itchiness
If you have any of the following side effects which are considered serious, you should contact your physician right away:
- Shallow breathing or shortness of breath
- Hallucinations
- Confusion
- Chest pain
- Dizziness
- Fainting
- Rapid heartbeat
- Irregular heartbeat
- Difficulty breathing
- Feeling light-headed

Less Serious Side Effects of Methadone Use
Some side effects do not warrant a call to the doctor right away because they really aren’t serious. The following side effects may occur when taking methadone but do not necessarily need to be report to your doctor unless they become difficult to cope with or become severe enough to interrupt your normal function:
- Anxious or nervous feelings
- Restlessness
- Difficulty sleeping or insomnia
- Feeling weak, drowsy or tired
- Dry mouth
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Loss of appetite
- Impotence
- Decreased sexual desire
